The 8th GRB Informal Group Meeting Held in Tokyo

The 8th Informal Group meeting was held by UN/ECE/GRB (Working Party on Noise) in Tokyo for three days, May 17-19, 2004, and attended by 30 participants including government representatives from Europe and the U.S. The objective of this Informal Group is to formulate draft amendments to ECE R51 to include into the regulation a new test method for simulating an urban driving cycle. The Informal Group has held meetings on a bi-monthly basis since January 2003, aiming to submit a draft on the new test method for R51 as a formal document to GRB at its 40th session in September this year. Japan is a regular participant to these discussions and has hosted the current meeting at the strong request of the members from Europe and the U.S.

Development of the new test method was virtually completed at the 7th meeting held in March this year. At the 8th meeting in Tokyo, therefore, the members discussed such topics as an off-cycle test method and a test schedule for obtaining data necessary to establish the noise levels in the amended regulation. Based on the data thus obtained, the old and new methods will be compared and the noise levels consistent with the new method be established in next meetings.
