Announcement on 7th JASIC Asian Government-Industry Meeting

[PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND]

The JASIC Asian Government-Industry Meeting is aimed to bring about the participation of Asian countries in WP29, the world's only forum for promoting the harmonization of automotive technical regulations. Through participation in WP29, Asian countries will have greater motivation to harmonize their regulations and improve their certification systems.

The G-I Meeting was staged a total of six times, from the first meeting at Tokyo in October 1998 to the sixth at Jakarta in January this year. There were a cumulative total of 700 participants in the six meetings, from government offices in the transport, environmental and vehicle regulation fields and from the vehicle and parts manufacturing industries of 13 Asian countries/regions.

The first three G-I Meetings comprising the First Series were aimed at defining optimal regulations and certification systems for Asian nations, with a view to the harmonization of regulations and the mutual recognition of approvals. In the Joint statement of the First Series, the representatives identified as the targets of future G-I Meetings the improvement of regulations and certification systems, participation in WP29, and accession to the 1958/1998 Agreements.

The 4th to 6th G-I Meetings comprising the Second Series were focused on the realization of observer participation in WP29 by Asian countries, and discussions were directed to the ways of overcoming the various existing obstacles to participation. A Joint statement for the Second Series was issued, and the target of the Third Series was decided to be the "Realization of ECE regulations adoption and WP29 participation".
