Experts Meet at Tokyo to Talk
Global Emission Test Cycles for Motorcycles

A WMTC/FEG meeting was held at Tokyo on April 17 and 18, aiming at establishing a global technical regulation for motorcycle emission test cycles by June 2003.

Japan is an active participant of the WMTC/FEG meeting which was initiated in May 2000 as an adhoc group belonging to the GRPE (Working Party on Pollution and Energy) of UN/ECE World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29).

A number of technical laboratories in Japan, Germany and other countries have greatly contributed to the development of a global motorcycle emission test cycle that reflects the road traffic realities of various regions in the world. As a result the test cycle development has reached its final stage, and the members gathered in Tokyo to prepare a technical report which will be presented to its mother group, GRPE, this June.

The WMTC/FEG meeting at Tokyo marked the first meeting since Mr. Albus of Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing was elected new chairman. The participants from the government and industry sectors of Europe and the U.S. numbered 11.

After the two-day meeting, on April 19 the participants enjoyed a technical tour of the National Traffic Safety and Environment Laboratory, a third-party research institute operating on Tokyo's outskirts.
