Wrap-up of the 7th Government-Industry
Meeting

1. It will help understand the usefulness of ECE Regulations
if countries, in their effort to deal with their safety and environmental
issues, choose to be actively involved in the establishment and revision
of ECE Regulations. For this reason, the participating countries of
the 7th G/I Meeting have agreed that the G/I Meeting will be evolved
into a conferential body of Asian governments and industries to discuss
the issues addressed by WP29 and eventually to debate also the methods
of having Asia's common safety and environmental interests reflected
on ECE Regulations.
2. At the 7th G/I Meeting, JASIC and the auto industry made specific
proposals concerning procedure for the harmonization of regulations
respectively. In response the participating countries have agreed
to discuss, on the basis of the JASIC proposal, the ways of conducting
harmonization activities duly taking into account national concerns
aimed at an efficient mutual recognition of certifications based on
the 1958 Agreement at the coming G/I Meetings.
3. The participating countries of the 7th G/I Meeting discussed the
issues that must be addressed in order to realize certification and
harmonization under the 1958 Agreement and the 1998 Agreement respectively.
Thanks to advice from countries already parties to the 1958 Agreement,
it became apparent that answers to some of the issues would be available.
The participating countries have agreed to continue the discussion
on the issues facing the countries at the coming G/I Meetings.
4. The participating countries of the 7th G/I Meeting discussed the
above three subjects, and it has been decided that in order to have
additional discussion on lighting regulations in depth, a voluntary
meeting of participants will be organized by DLT (Department of Land
Transport), Thailand.
5. The next G/I Meeting will be convened in Vietnam from October 15
to 17, 2003, with VR (Vietnam Register) and JASIC acting as co-organizers.
